Attended the Paley Festival 2009 yesterday for the Site, they aired the final three episodes of “Pushing Daisies” and the event was hosted by creator, Bryan Fuller. Although, Bryan was not the only member of the crew that attended, writers, the musicians, cast members from the unaired episodes and Chi McBride (Emerson) and Ellen Greene (Aunt Vivian) were in attendance as well!
I arrived without a ticket, the show sold out 20 minutes after tickets went on sale. A very nice gentleman and members from the website “The Pie Maker” provided me with a ticket as soon as I arrived, I’m very grateful to both of them for doing that for me, I was thrilled! Many of us met at the premiere of the show in 2007 at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, where I had also met David, Anna, her family, and Gracie for the first time as well. It was like a big reunion, all of us remembered each other from last year’s Paley Festival, ComicCon, etc.
Some staff members from “The Pie Maker” were telling me an interesting story about Anna calling our Dave last year at the after party had to call him to ask if it was true. Which it was really nice to be able to speak with you on the phone during my long wait in line Dave, thank you (Oh & I grabbed you some stuff!).
Prior to the screenings, Jim Dooley and his band played a few of the songs from the soundtrack for quite some time (it was brilliant). While the band was playing people were being seated, Bryan was chatting with a few fans, and Chi McBride attempted to sneak in through the side door to his seat but EVERYONE managed to notice and got really excited that more cast members would show up. Bryan and Ellen made their way on-stage to introduce the screenings, and then he additionally called Barry Sonnenfeld onto the stage as well! Then the both of them had bags of t-shirts and they ran around the auditorium throwing them to fans – I actually managed to catch one! Barry looked straight at me and tossed it right into my hands – I was ballistic! It was ‘Jews for Cheeses’ shirt that Chuck wears in the first episode – I’ll take a picture of it .
I really don’t want to give away what happens during the last three episodes at all, not even a hint – but I do feel that they ended the show really well. I was really emotional, just because it all came to an end, but Bryan let us all know that DC Comics will be continuing the show (no hints of a movie at all…). The episodes were absolutely fantastic of course, as was Anna’s performance in each and every one of them, it made us all even more upset that the show was canceled, you can tell that there was definitely more in mind coming that would’ve been brilliant.
We gave Bryan and the crew a standing ovation and I can tell he was trying really hard not to tear up…which made me cry . He thanked us all so much for trying to save the show and supporting it from beginning to end.
He brought special props from the show to give out to the audience in a raffle (they gave us tickets while we were being seated); such items included the ‘Mother’ license plate from the Norwegians episode, the ‘bell’ from Robbing Hood, the ‘Bee Key’ from the first episode, Ned’s bottle of champagne from the last episode, Olive’s ‘arm sling’, signed soundtrack CDs from Jim Dooley, etc. lots of really cool stuff! They thanked us all again, and allowed anyone who wanted to come up to greet the cast and speak to Bryan. The family I was seated with took several really good pictures that they’re going to email to me – so I’ll be sure to link those as soon as I hear back from them.
It was a great evening, again I’m thankful to those that made it possible for me to be present at the event, I’m very grateful. It was so fun going to all of these events (comiccon, etc.) for the show to represent the site, definitely experiences I’ll never forget. My next event to cover is the “Land of the Lost” premiere in Hollywood – which I’m still trying to convince Dave to fly out for to go with me .
