Haha, but Anna loves that adorable scruffbag (and so do we!) It'll be interesting to see if they actually share the screen at all - unlike 'Timeline' when they missed each other. 'The Beauty and the Scruff' - that would make good movie

Film opened today in the United Kingdom - It hasn't been well-recieved by the critics . Anyone have a chance to catch the film over the weekend? Please let us know your thoughts (careful on the spoilers)! David's performance received very high praises! Although, the reviewers are being a bit more harsh about Anna's portrayal of Briony - guess we need to judge for ourselves, sometimes I disagree with movie critics. Will be beginning our "London Boulevard" competition over the weekend and posting our exclusive interview with Ken Bruen, author of the novel.

You can listen to one such review here: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00w17yq/Kermode_and_Mayos_Film_Review_26_11_2010/Not sure if this will work outside the UK, but it's the weekly film review on BBC Radio 5 Live with film critic Mark Kermode. The 'London Boulevard' review lasts 8 minutes and is at 1:38 to save you listening through the whole two hours of diatribe. Mr Kermode praises DT's performance very highly, 'He rolls a line around his mouth' with great expertise apparently - whatever that means. Of Anna, not a word is uttered But after the review a listener is reported to have thought Anna to be 'excellent' (no, it wasn't me). Mr Kermode declined to comment , but he said he did generally enjoy the movie I'll try and get to see this movie during the week, as I must now confess that I have never yet seen any of Anna's films in the cinema, and it's probably a very overdue experience! When I've seen it, I'll let you know what I think!

When I've seen it, I'll let you know what I think! Well, I saw it this afternoon along with about 20 others in my local multi-plex. Wow, what an awful place to watch a movie - bring back proper cinemas, please Anyway, first of all, it's a decent film and I enjoyed it It's fun at times, very, very brutal at times, and when there's not an f*** word or a c*** word to hear then no-ones talking (so beware if you don't like that type of thing). A mature couple in the cinema walked out after about 20 minutes, probably because of the language. There have been comparisons with 'Layer Cake' but that's a much better film in my opinion and Daniel Craig carried that much better than Colin Farrell does 'London Boulevard'. Farrell is pretty wooden, has no witty lines, and doesn't seem to be enjoying himself much! Keira Knightley was much the same playing an actress (bit of a stretch eh?)and Ray Winstone just played at being Ray Winstone, London gangster-actor, but very, very racist. The plot is about London gangsters and it shares a lot of the amorality and brutality of 'Layer Cake' and the cheap value of life, but differs in that it is very grounded in London inner-city life while in 'Layer Cake' the main protagonists were more detached. This adds to the threatening atmosphere of 'London Boulevard' as you wonder if you might accidentally bump into some of these unsavoury characters. This is enough to put me off living in London or even being there after dark (though I have many times, and as recently as earlier this year to see our Anna perform, and I'm still here to tell the tale). Anyway, I won't say anything more about the plot as you'll know enough from the publicity and I won't spoil the fun! So, what about the performances of Mr and Mrs Thewlis-Friel? Well, first off Mr T-F has a lot more to do, and I have to agree he does a fine job. Scruffy, dope-smoking, laid back but with a sharp wit and very vicious streak, and a deep hatred of the foul paparazzi. Mr T-F must have loved the part and it shows. He steals all the scenes from Farrell, dictating the pace and feel of each one with a mastery that Colin can only envy. Amanda and Tannim, and others, will love it ;D As for Mrs T-F well there's good news and there's bad news. The bad is that she only has a few short scenes and her character is not deeply drawn. The good news is that she seems to have been taking acting lessons from Mr T-F and puts a real sparkle into her scenes. She looks great, has a mischievous twinkle in her eye and brings some much-needed energy to the movie. I always get excited when I see one of Anna's films for the first time, and as usual I was searching for a glimpse of her in every scene, but alas her opportunities to thrill me were too little to sate my hunger. It took quite a lot of self-control to stop myself yelling out at one point 'I've hugged her, that gorgeous Anna Friel, yes I have!' Ahh, such lovely memories One day it will be great to see Mr and Mrs T-F on screen together. If it had happened with 'London Boulevard' then it would have been the best scene in the film by miles. So that's it. No Oscars for anyone with this movie, but it's worth a watch. Any movie with a Bob Dylan track being played on a vinyl record must have something going for it! Go see it for yourselves

The good news is that she seems to have been taking acting lessons from Mr T-F and puts a real sparkle into her scenes. Hum... not be a drag, but why in the world would Anna need acting lessons from a guy - with all due respect, and my sincere apologies to the fans - who's been no more than a supporting actor for 25 years?? Anna's been a leading actress on stage and screen for more than a decade. She doesn't need lessons. She needs good roles and opportunities.

Amazing review DaveC, one of your best next to the one you typed up for "Breakfast at Tiffany's", I've read it twice already and each time it hypes me up more and more for the US release in February. I'm jealous you've had the opportunity to catch the film already! Thank you for so much in-depth information about David and Anna's performances, I've recommended your review to fans at my Site: davidthewlis.net/index/2010/11/29/david-praised-for-his-performance-in-london-boulevard/

Amazing review DaveC, one of your best next to the one you typed up for "Breakfast at Tiffany's", I've read it twice already and each time it hypes me up more and more for the US release in February. I'm jealous you've had the opportunity to catch the film already! Thank you for so much in-depth information about David and Anna's performances, I've recommended your review to fans at my Site: davidthewlis.net/index/2010/11/29/david-praised-for-his-performance-in-london-boulevard/You're very welcome Amanda You make me feel like a proper film critic - having said that I've since read some other reviews and have found some similar themes in the professional reviews so we can't all be wrong. David's fans will love his performance and I think Anna's fans will love hers and wish she had more screen time (as was my main gripe). I think Anna's performance showed her growing confidence and ability to make the most of a small part. All those hours in bed with David looking at DVDs of great acting performances have had a number of positive consequences On further reflection I think David's performance is so impressive because he molds his part seemingly effortlessly into a complex and interesting character but with a consistency of morality (or amorality) that makes the bizarreness of his actions somehow believable. His character talks of his very extreme past acts which seem inconsistent with his present persona and then he does things during the movie which again seem at odds with his laid back approach to life. This seems to be an impossible circle to square and yet David's playing of the role and his subtleties of detail give his character's behaviour an improbable credibility. I guess that is the true art of acting. The other main actors in the film just can't come near to David's subtlety and skill and are not helped by such an inconsistent script where characters often change their behaviour for no apparent reason. Unfortunately for Anna her character is very shallowly written and her behaviour is entirely predictable so we'll never know in this film if Anna could have matched David's level of skill in her performance. However, as I've said she does provide the movie with its only real source of sparkle, love of life and positive energy and I was very grateful for that amongst the dourness of the main characters and the violence of the language and the action. Anyway, I hope this makes sense, and please feel free to add any of my comments to your website. You'll definitely enjoy the movie immensely and rave over David's performance when you see it. You'll need to see the film a few times to really appreciate what he does, I think. I can't wait to read what you and Tannim write about it next year.

Your detailed reviews are always accurate, and I appreciate the honesty! A majority of reviews for this film have claimed its "disappointing", and the fans have given it lower ratings and harsher criticism then journalists, which is something that caught us all completely off-guard. I've tried to avoid most of the reviews by fans & critics because I will have to wait until February to see the film myself, but I have been anticipating it for over a year now, to be disappointed is something I'm dreading. Even if the film doesn't meet my personal expectations, I always enjoy seeing either David or Anna on-screen, and those are performances that never disappoint Knowing you, I was genuinely afraid of where the continuation of that sentence was leading Exactly why we are all very proud fans of both David and Anna! Thank you again DaveC for adding further input to your review! I appreciate the insight, and all the time you've instilled into detailing each element of the film. It has been a pleasure to read this again and again! All I can say is, February cannot come soon enough for me and Tannim, it'll be a delayed Christmas treat. Oh, and just as a heads up! We've just started our "London Boulevard" competition, I know this comes a week after the release date but we've wanted to give fans the chance to see the film prior to entering. One of the requirements to enter is submitting a scan of your ticket stub, if you've tossed yours out already, no worries, we did announce this quite late. I've had finals this week at my University, Tannim and Dave have also been quite hectic as well, we apologize for the week-long delay. 'The David Thewlis Network' and 'Anna Friel's Official Website' are celebrating the long-awaited release of "London Boulevard" and giving fans the chance to win an exclusive photograph, personally hand-signed by both David and Anna!Visit the contest page for further details!
