Saw it this weekend. I was a bit scared it was gonna be another good opportunity wasted by a mediocre director, like St. Ives, but, thank God, I was wrong. This is an exquisite piece of work from everybody involved, producers, writers, directors, cast and specially from Anna.
There are a couple of SPOILERS in this text, so if people intend to see it, I suggest they read this afterwards.
The way she portrayed the initially mercenary and later on honest Bella was absolutelly brilliant. She's dramatic and funny, sweet and shallow, lovable and spoiled at the same time. I'm sorry Timothy Spall was the only one nominated for a BAFTA, because Anna proved to be a consummate actress at 21 and deserved it, as well as Paul McGann, Kenneth Cranham, Peter Vaughan and even David Morrissey, of whom I'm not a particular fan, but was very good as the tormented headmaster.
Also I was pleasantly surprised with Steven Mackintosh, who turned out to be a very believable match for Anna's newly found virtue. What a delight to see her in such a high quality production, where her talent is shown and valued the way we all wish it to be.
