Hi Dave The first time I really noticed Anna was when she appeared on the cover of 'Sky' magazine in October 1995 - all windswept hair extensions and such an innocent, sexy look! Anyway, enough of that! In the interview of her second 'Sky' magazine cover story in January 1997 was the following quote, ' In a matter of hours she will stand in front of a bathroom mirror (and a film crew) and dance along to Madonna, naked as the day she was born. On Sunday, the one day of the week she usually sees boyfriend Darren Day, she will film a raunchy menage-a-trois scene. On Monday she'll seduce one of her co-stars in a linen cupboard.' The second and third scenes are well-known and well-capped, but the first-mentioned scene has never appeared, either in the BBC film or the USA DVD (which as far as I could tell was exactly the same as the BBC film - even the titles!). Nor have any stills or vidcaps of rushes ever surfaced to my knowledge. I've always wondered if this scene was ever filmed, and if somewhere in the BBC vaults lies some stunning footage of naked, young Anna dancing seductively to 'Like a Virgin'. I keep hoping something will turn up in one of those out-take compilations, or some snooping BBC cleaner will stumble on it and put it on 'Youtube', but no luck so far.  Do you have any information, or views on this mystery? Anna's fans (well this one at least) want to know! ;D All the best, Dave |

Now thats something I have no idea on at all... I remember the quote from the interview, and it does seem strange that if it was filmed nothing has ever surfaced... (mind you having said that I'm still searching for a copy "You Drive Me" !!!) The Tribe footage is something of legend now I think (well something akin to it...!) and was definitely a bold move away from soap-dom for Anna - perhaps the thought of 3 main nude scenes in the film , made Poliakoff edit in a different way, or he had a choice of scenes to edit in... perhaps the dance scene , if it were shot, was not deemed essential to the plot and edited out.... Actually there is a 3rd scene of Anna naked in the film which wasnt mentioned in the interview.. there is the short shower scene which is shot from a distance.... (I was quite disappointed in the USA DVD release...no extras or interviews or such like... and the transfer could have been a lot better !! ... I may get in touch with Tango and see what licence they had... a full 2 disc version with interviews and additional scenes extras should be the minimum !!!  ) I'll ask around and see if any of my contacts has heard of "the Madonna scene"... if not, I know someone who will know the answer !! lol ....  |

I agree with everything you've said  Firstly though - as the other two nude scenes mentioned in the article were very accurately described, it is fair to assume the third scene was also scheduled to be filmed. Hopefully your contact can verify that ;D I agree the scene may have been cut on editing - it's difficult to see how such a scene would be central to the denouement of the story no matter what it's 'artistic' merits, and the film did drag rather, with some plodding pacing and obscure sub-plots. I certainly agree about the DVD release too, what a rip-off  . The picture quality is no better than my own DVD recording from a VHS tape of the original showing on analogue TV. I long for a decent digital transmission to record - surely the BBC can find room for it on one of their many little-watched channels  They didn't even include it in the recent Poliakoff season  And yes, I remember the long-shot nude shower scene. A tantalising hors d'oeuvre for the main course. Since 'The Tribe' Anna's specialised more in bath-tub scenes than showers - maybe she can develop the theme with a nice long scene with Becks and the lads in 'Goal 3' ;D - 'nuff said! |

Don't you find the nude scenes in 'The Tribe' a little creepy?
As for it not being shown in the recent Poliakoff season, do you wonder why? Poliakoff is one of the most over-rated writer/directors in the UK, his track record has plenty of pretentious rubbish on it, (check out 'Century' for instance), but even he is embarrassed by 'The Tribe'. I saw him once discussing his oeuvre (on the 'South Bank Show' I think) and though he tackled 'The Tribe' he looked utterly sheepish.

Actually dont find them creepy - compared to scenes which other dramas and films had in them(at the time), they were very tame . It was quite an exploited subject really (with the full frontal shots), although they wouldnt have been half as infamous if Anna hadnt been in the programme . I quite rate Poliakoff, obviously not up there with Leigh or Bleasdale but pretty close - "Century" not one of his best works (but pretty decent from Clive Owen), but "Shooting The Past" is pretty good (Tim Spall is sublime !!) |

Caught a bit of 'The Tudors' on BBC2 tonight, though didn't hang around for long. There was that insufferable self-worshipper Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Henry VIII (Hah! and double Hah!) and who should be on screen with him but Jeremy Northam. Wonder if the topic of that threesome scene cropped up between them in off-camera chat?

It's a small world in filmland I guess! I seem to recall Mr Rhys Meyers was credited in a lads' mag interview with announcing that Mr Northam was very uncomfortable and found it difficult to perform during the filming of that scene - but then his whole effort in 'The Tribe' looked to me like he was wishing he was somewhere else! I always wonder how much notice these artists take of all this petty tittle-tattle - do they accept that it's all just part of the rough and tumble of getting exposure and making a name for yourself or do they take serious umbrage? Depends I suppose! I think I'd quite like to hear that Mr Northam punched Mr Rhys Meyers' lights out on the set of 'The Tudors' but somehow I don't think he's got it in him. I must admit I think I'd find it quite difficult to concentrate on my lines and characterisation with a young Anna Friel stripping naked and crawling all over me. It's no wonder Northam looked so wooden in that scene Oh Hell - Jordan and Peter have just turned up on Wossie's show  I must go and find my remote and turn over to News 24 |

The Tribe - to quote my dear Blondezila - is a weird movie... but in a good way, I guess. It's like an eighties movie... that gothic, stylish tribe, the posh and unlikely costumes, everybody is neat and gorgeous, the sex thing, which we think is gonna be something kinky and x-rated, and turns out to be rather dull and PG-17.
I kinda enjoyed it. Good actors and great acting. Anna and Joely Richardson were extraordinary in their last scene. I was very impressed and glad to see them yell and scream at each other at the top of their lungs. It's pretty much what should have happened in the end of MWY, and didn't.
Anyway, it's sad the director was foolish enough not to realize that the actual movie would be forever overshadowed by that dull 2-minute threesome. I wish people remembered Anna's performance. Like someone brilliantly stated at IMDB, "if the script and/or direction was any better, we might not have had to go down this alley...".
