This movie was on this past weekend and when I saw it had Anna in, I just had to watch it. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it is a truly great film. Which I love to pieces and is now one of my all time favourites. Anna gave a fantastic performace as Prue and the whole cast was fantastic ;D Has anyone else seen the movie? If yes, what did you think?

Really love this film.... remember the first time I saw it and how much of a change it was for Anna... think David Leland gets decent performances from the 3 female leads.... (from what I understand Mr Spielberg and Mr Hanks are fans of the film.... which is always good to hear considering the level of achievement they have in recent war films..."Saving Private Ryan" being in my top 10 fave ever films...)
Always reminded of Anna's interview on set and how she fought back the tears to say "c'est la vie"... after questions about you-know-who..... quite poignant.....

Good to see your post, Amy. There are not enough posts like it. However, have very mixed feelings about this film. It is OK to look at and Anna is not bad, but it is ridden with cliches, don't you think? And that ending......rotten! As for the shock of discovering that Anna had married Nigel Planer...... Think the film should have been harder edged. Doesn't get anywhere near dislodging 'MWY' from the top of my Anna film chart. Sorry to be a grump.
The cinema release was delayed for quite a while, have never been totally sure why. It did get a pretty wide release and troubled the box office top ten for a few weeks. It was even shown at my local fleapit. My most profound memory of that time though, is of piles and piles of the Angela Huth novel with the film tie-in cover lying around in Waterstones in Bath. Reckon 99% of them ended up at the pulpers.
(It has always been interesting to compare and contrast the careers of the three female leads. Weisz is still probably ahead with her Oscar and whatnot, with Anna coming up on the rails. Catherine McCormack has gone into a bit of a stall. I noticed that she is appearing in an adaptation of Henry James' 'Portrait of a Lady' at Bath Theatre Royal in the near future. She has also done radio work recently, always a sign that you are jobbing rather than starring. Recall some Anna radio ads from just a few years back when things weren't going so well.)

Just realised that I didnt have decent screencaps on this in the gallery...... so have just redone the DVD... plus all the Interviews, Out-Takes, Alt Ending and Behind-The-Scenes.... ;D DVD out-takes etc for this film are really odd. That alt ending with them on the tractors is just bizarre. And as for the scene with Charlie Higson in the tank, tearing up the countryside! What the Jimmy Hill is that all about? Take your point about Spielberg and Hanks, Dave. Still think that 'The Land Girls' is very, very flawed though. It was LG that got Leland his directing slot on 'Band of Brothers'. However, he has done pretty much nothing else since. Maybe he has been forced into the ad world like Sandra Goldbacher (director of MWY) who has also done very little filmwise lately. Tis a tough business.

Me too Because on TV it was 7 years ago and I was 9, so I didn watch it And haven't seen it too I try to buy it on ebay, but it's a problem - I don't have credit card, just cash, so...But I hope that it will be okay and they will send me Watermelon, The Land Girls, The War Bride and many many more In CZ we can't buy many DVDs with Anna - just Goal, A Midsummer Night Dream, Me Without You, Timeline and An Everlasting Piece I have them and Our Mutual Friend, PD, Tales from the Crypt and Irish Jam This movie could be great, I think that it's a great movie. Maybe one day, with luck, I will watch it and say: Wow!

Finally watched it. Don't know the book, but I believe the movie has two great flaws: first, the lame and superficial script by Keith Dewhurst and David Leland. Second, Mackintosh as Joe.
Everything that apparently worked for him in Our Mutual Friend, went south in Land Girls. He has a finacée, but is seduced by Prue in the beginning. That's ok, since Prue has a tendency for meaningless affairs. After that, seeing that Ag is ignorant about sex, Prue recommends that she and Joe do it once. It's difficult to see the gorgeous Rachel Weisz with the skinny and dwarfish Mackintosh, besides the fact that one could question the inconvenience of her losing her virginity before her marriage, being the prude she is. Nevertheless, being the "anti-heartthrob", it's acceptable for Joe to have an insipid fiancée, an affair with the fairly promiscuous Prue and a didactic lay with Ag.
What simply doesn't convince me is the passion Stella develops for him. Everything happens too quickly, no details, and in one minute she ceases to love her fiancée and falls in love with Joe. Their romantic dialogues (specially in the stairs) are not only dumb, they're phoney, there's no chemistry between them, not a spark of sexual attraction. That's when both mistakes come together, the weakness of the script and the crass mistake of casting Mackintosh for that role.
Funny that McCormack is the lead actress, but Anna has the most dramatic scene, when she receives the news of her husband dying the day after their wedding. In the hot tub scene, as she weeps and mourns his death, what could have been a great chance for the three of them to shine, turns into a sob fest with the corniest lines ever. It's a shame. Anyway, in spite of the fact the movie loses itself on the tragic turn, and the ending is horrendous, Land Girls is not bad. Perfectly watchable.
Did you guys know Angela Huth wrote a sequel called Once a Land Girl, focusing the story on Prue, this time?
