Funny. I had the worst expectations for this movie, and I absolutelly loved it. Anna is splendid, chubbier, red haired, exactly like a pin-up girl from the forties. When Molly Parker - the sister in-law - tells her, resentfull, "you're perfect", it's natural. Thre's no exageration whatsoever.
At times, The War Bride reminds me of those movies from the forties, with Bette Davis or Joan Crawford, made for them to shine from the first to the last scene; Anna is in every scene - War Bride's trump card - and shines with charisma and talent of a great actress, and bringing, on top of it, the beauty and the glamour of a pin-up. Perfection.
The soundtrack doesn't overdo it; sets are credible; screenplay is sharp; supporting cast is excellent. We already knew Brenda Fricker and Molly Parker were good, but even the generally insipid Loren Dean does a nice job as Joe, and Aden Young's nerd face suits the role of Charlie.
Anna's Lily is an ansolute delight. Besides Daisies, War Bride is, since now, my favourite of her works. It's one of those gems that Hollywood's main stream simply - and unjustly - ignored.
