Agree with you davec on a certain level. Not at all sure about your desire to hear Anna using her 'own' voice. Last time she did was in 'Fields of Gold' and she sounded rotten. I think putting on an accent helps focus her mind on her character. As for her performance in the show impressing heavyweight Hollywood types, that isn't really the point. If the show pulls in the punters she may become 'box office' and get cast accordingly. She is knocking on in age now (in Hollywood terms), as you have pointed out yourself before, and she isn't exactly an unknown quantity. Hollywood types have known about her for some time and largely dismissed her, but if she showed she could appeal to a large mainstream audience in a hit TV show....... Finding the marketing of the show interesting; going for the fanboys, with ComiCon etc, when the show's natural constituency is clearly going to be women if they keep playing up the romance angle. (Sexist stereotyping? Not me, guv.) Guess it doesn't hurt to aim for as varied an audience as possible though. I'm still definitely conflicted about 'P.D.'. Am prepared to give it a real chance; hoping for 'good stuff' but fearing 'silly'. (By the way, name-checking 'Fawlty Towers'? Showing your age, man! )

Yes Joe. Anna's career path is a topic we've all discussed before and I'm still not sure what path she's trying to take. I still get the feeling she's hankering after Oscar nominations and maybe eventually an actual gong and I just don't see this really helping her. Maybe an Emmy will have to do If you're going to name-check a comedy show, might as well be a great one. Still just as funny, clever and altogether superb as the day it first aired. And yes, you're right, I am old enough to remember it! I'm with you on Pushing Daisies, living more in hope than expectation.

On 'career paths'. Don't get the impression that Anna has a long-term plan anymore. If you listen to, or read, the interviews she gave as a teenager, when her mind was being filled with all sorts of heady guff by Conway Van What's-his-face and co, the sky was the limit as far as her ambitions were concerned. (Mr Oscar included.) When she was being put on the cover of Vanity Fair back in 1999, again her ambitions may have been sky-high. But not now. I think she knows that if she gets to work in decent stuff for the next couple of decades solid, she will have done well. She is clearly still a pretty driven person, but I think that drive has been tempered by a healthy dose of realism and experience.

Joe, I agree totally about the cling film - yuck! While checking my alerts I came across the following interview with Anna from 18th February 2001 - my XXth birthday as it happens. It's by Bryan Appleyard of the Sunday Times and it's listed in the magazine articles on the Reference Site but not linked. I'm sure I've read it before but I think it's quite insightful into Anna's career ambitions at this time. She was about to start her run of 'Lulu' on the London stage and was hoping it would be her big break. It wasn't, as we now know. Anyway, you can find it here, and I think any younger or newer Anna-fans who did not follow her back then will find it very interesting. www.bryanappleyard.com/article.php?page=10&article_id=124As you say Joe I think reality has more of a hold on Anna's aspirations nowadays - maybe Mr Thewlis's influence and very probably changing priorities now she's a mum and almost a wife. Just part of growing up really. Incidentally a piece today by the same interviewer on the Venice Film Festival has him interviewing Miss Knightley and noting talk of an Oscar for her role in 'Atonement'. Having sat through her awful performance in the dire tripe that is 'Pirates 2' on TV this week I really don't get it

'P.D.' clingfilm picture has given me the creeps...........Am so not into that. Am I missing something here ? Why ? LOL Think this "non-touching" touching has been mentioned in a few interviews with BF.... I suppose it's a way of keeping the storyline of Ned n Chuck not being able to touch but working out ways to be able to touch.... possibly.... (ahem)...

Duh, Dave! davec has it right. Clingfilm!? Come on! Surely a poor man's latex, and strictly for the pervs. Whatever you are thinking about future directions that 'P.D.' plots could go with this, don't go there!

Whatever you are thinking about future directions that 'P.D.' plots could go with this, don't go there! You do realise now anytime I watch that show now that's exactly the place I'll be going. ;D You should read all the comments on various board how people think it's cute and romantic (the USA Today pic that is now the above)

Having sat through her awful performance in the dire tripe that is 'Pirates 2' on TV this week I really don't get it At the risk of seeming to be obsessively off-topic, have to keep up the assault on The Knightley. They say satire died when Henry Kissinger won the Nobel Peace Prize, but what if KK ever won an Oscar? Am simply totally at a loss to explain why this person has not been given the bum's rush. Can only think that as the UK media is full of private school educated types, all too many journos recognise her as one of their own and feel all too comfortable in promoting/sheltering her. Did anyone catch her schtick on the loathsome Jonathan Ross show? I saw about two minutes before I had to switch channels for the sake of my mental health.

LOL joe, must say it's driving the thread topic to it's limits !!! But yes - I did see the JR Show and KK - it did surprise me that she was that articulate on his show - in other interviews I've been (un)fortunate to see , she has been v nervous and hardly seemed to be able to give an answer. I think your thoughts on the media and KK both being from the private-school class could be a v good theory - of all the actresses around today, she is definitely not the one with most talent (in fact IMHO, probably one of the worst) - and where the "Oscar" soundings for "Atonement" can be coming from, I really do wonder .... the clips I've seen show her at her most wooden... (did she go to the Hugh Grant school of Acting )

Back on the original train of this thread... Is it my imagination or has hype over 'P.D.' already peaked? Seems that the show is due for a January 2008 transmission in the UK, so the first series run will probably be over in the US before we get to see it on our TVs. Could be that the show's future will already be decided before ITV even screen it, which could have implications for how they treat it. Have had a good chuckle at the thought of davec conducting his own poll of potential 'P.D.' viewers over the pond. (Will strive to keep the board KK comment free in future.)

Anna got a mention on The Sun website - biggest hit in the Brit invasion..... ;D ;D www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2001320029-2007420098,00.html ANNA Friel is tipped to make it big on US TV with a show called Pushing Daisies.
The ex-Brookside star, 31, plays the girlfriend of a man who brings dead people back to life with a single touch.
Critics reckon she could be the biggest hit in a British invasion including Angelina Jolie’s ex-hubby Jonny Lee Miller in Eli Stone.
And then there’s Damian Lewis in cop show Life.
Ex-EastEnder Michelle Ryan has the lead role in The Bionic Woman. Also found that Pushing Daisies received a special showing at the recent Edinburgh TV festival - on Saturday 25 August - 5pm at the Tinto Venue See this link for details... media.guardian.co.uk/mediaguardian/story/0,,2152059,00.html About 3/4 down the page - Screening Pushing Daisies (ITV) Venue: Tinto Stars Golden Globe nominee Lee Pace and Anna Friel. Also found a very interesting note on the itvplc website in a report by Michael Grade where, believe it or not, PD and Anna get a mention in a Board Results Report... See here: www.itvplc.com/itv/news/regulatory/rnsitem?id=1186552867nRNSH7086Babout 3/4 of the way down are the lines: We also made three major US acquisitions for ITV for 2008: Warner Brothers' Pushing Daisies starring Anna Friel and, from CBS Paramount, Swingtown and Cane. so it looks like it will be 2008 by the time we get to see PD in full DD5.1 and HD.... will be sorting something for those who need to see it before then !!! ;D
